From the last chapter:
"How about telling the shorter 'father's version?' "
"Okay, let's see; I pulled into a campground just west of Calgary late one night. Davey was just standing by the gate to the campground. I thought he was the owner's son. That night I find out he had been abandoned there earlier that day. He had been on his own since spring when his so-called real father threw him out. The last person he was with just took off on him. I had already planned to adopt a son of my own after my summer road trip. Last winter I did all the paperwork and got all the background checks done. So… as I got to know Davey on our way to Banff, I called my lawyer friend so see if I could adopt him. Last Friday, we got the final adoption papers. His so-called father even went to court to sign the papers. That's the short boring 'father's' version. Davey will be more than happy to tell you his more exciting version tomorrow. He told all of Banff before we left and I bought the t-shirts to prove it" I chuckled.
"How old is he?"
"10 but he points out that he will be 11 next month."
"My son just turned 9 last month. Would you like to have breakfast together in the morning?"
"Sure, hopefully Davey and your son will get along and wear each other out instead of us." We both laughed.
"How long are you here at the resort for?"
"I booked it for tonight and tomorrow night."
"Great, TJ and I are here for until Sunday morning. How about we let Davey and TJ plan the events tomorrow?"
"That sounds good to me."
I got up to leave but Tom said he was going to sit and relax a little longer. We exchanged good nights and I left.
Chapter 5
Thursday
The next morning, Davey started tickling my feet at 7am. We wrestled around together for about an hour when a knock came at the door. Davey went downstairs to answer it.
"Hi, I'm TJ." He said in a shy voice.
"Hi, I'm Davey."
"My father asked me to come over and ask you when you wanted to go for breakfast."
"Come on in and I'll ask my Daddy."
"No, I'll wait out here."
"Daddy, there's a boy downstairs that says his father wants to know when we are going for breakfast."
"Oh Ya, I forgot to tell you that I met TJ's father outside last night after I tucked you in. We thought it would be fun to have breakfast together. I hope that's alright with you, Son?"
"Sure that will be fun."
"Okay go tell TJ we will be ready in a half an hour."
During breakfast, Davey told the more exciting version on how I adopted him. The boys were getting along so great together. After breakfast, they decided they wanted to go for a hike. Tom and TJ went back to their cabin to change. Davey and I changed in the camper since that's where out hiking boots were. I asked Davey to bring the walkie-talkies and whistles. He took one of each and I took the others. I some how knew the boys would end up going ahead of Tom and I so I wanted to make sure we could call them back without yelling. I grabbed our backpacks.
We met Tom and TJ back at the cabins. Davey ran in to grab our cameras and camcorder. Tom seemed slightly uneasy when Davey brought the cameras out. Davey asked TJ if he wanted to hike to the hot springs. TJ asked Tom if it was all right. Tom didn't really want to but agreed since the rest of us wanted too. TJ remembered that he didn't have a swimsuit. Davey said the hot springs would let him go in his shorts and they supplied towels. Davey ran back in the cabin to get our swimsuits and towels. I put them in my pack. We stopped at the café to get some bottles of water and snacks.
As we were on the hike, Tom kept calling the boys back as they got ahead. I let Tom in on a secret. I stopped and showed him the walkie-talkie and whistle. I told him that Davey has the same in his pack. He relaxed a bit but still seemed a bit tense. I chalked it up to being an overly protective father.
The boys noticed everything; deer, elk, eagles, moose weird looking moss and plants. It was great seeing the world through the eyes of 9 and 10-year-old boys. Davey took lots of pictures. TJ seemed shy and quiet but I was comparing him to Davey. I guess I would come across as quiet and shy compared to Davey. We were really in no rush and the boys enjoyed stopping when they found something new. It took about two hours to reach the hot springs.
Davey took out his wallet and offered to pay for TJ's admission. Tom and I paid our own. Davey stopped at Mr. Taylor's office to introduce his new friend TJ. Mr. Taylor came out in the lobby to great Tom and me. Davey and I went into the locker room to change and lock up our backpacks Tom and TJ went directly to the pool. We found then sitting at a table.
"TJ come on, take off your shirt and let's go in the pool," Davey said.
"I want to leave it on," TJ replied.
"That's Okay let's go. I want you to meet some of the lifeguards." The boys ran off to meet the lifeguards.
"Well… Tom, I don't know about you, but that hot tub looks too tempting to pass up after our hike."
"Yes, it will be nice to soak my weary bones." We laughed.
The hot water really felt so good on my muscles. I closed my eyes but Tom kept an eye on the boys. I didn't think it was necessary. The boys were sort of on the 'Buddy System'. There were four lifeguards around the deck of the pool and two lifeguards on the high chairs. There may have been 20 people actually in the pool. Most parents were either in the whirlpools or in sunbathing on the lounge chairs around the pool. After Davey introduced TJ to all the lifeguards, they jumped in the pool. They threw a ball back and forth in the shallow end for a while. TJ started to loosen up with Davey. The boys started splashing each other. I lost track of time. I must have half dozed off. I jumped awake when Davey leaned on the edge of the hot tub and splashed me in the face. He was laughing. I grabbed his wrist and pulled him onto my lap in the hot tub. I wrapped one arm around him to pin his arms at his sides. I took my other hand and playfully splashed Davey's face. He giggled through his teeth but kept his mouth closed. I then started tickling his belly. He laughed and asked TJ to help. I looked and TJ had a big smile on his face. Every time Davey reached his one of his arms to TJ, I would tickle that armpit. I then wrapped both arms tightly around him in a big bear hug.
"Daddy, can you come in the pool and throw me and TJ around?"
"Sure, I was starting to turn into a lobster anyway. Are you coming in Tom?"
"No, I think I'll join the wimpy parents and try getting a tan."
"Come on TJ," Davey reached for his hand. TJ looked at Tom to see if it was all right. Tom nodded.
I picked Davey up and jumped in the pool with him. TJ walked around to the shallow end and waded in to meet us. I tickle threw Davey a few times while TJ watched. Davey gently pushed TJ into me. I gently held him along his sides and gave in a tickle squeeze. He giggled and wiggled around. I asked him if he wanted me to throw him in the air. He looked a bit nervous so I just picked him up and lowered in back down a few times. Davey kept telling me to throw TJ as I throw him. Slowly, TJ started to feel less nervous and more comfortable with me. Eventually he told me to throw him but toward the shallow end. I ended up throwing Davey toward the deep end and tossing TJ toward the shallow end. I would go under water to pick Davy up higher and tossing him. I did the same with TJ but I held on to him in the air and together we fell toward the shallow end.
I felt TJ wince slightly when my thumb would press against his lower back. It wasn't a tickle twitch. TJ t-shirt eventually came out of his shorts. When I was under water, I opened my eyes to grab TJ. His shirt was floating up and that's when I noticed the dark bruises along his lower back. I pretended that I didn't notice and kept throwing the boys around. I was more careful when I threw TJ. I would grab TJ under his bum instead of his sides.
After I threw TJ, Davey jumped on my head when I turned around. He yelled at TJ to help him try and dunk me. TJ grabbed me around the neck from behind. I reached around and grabbed TJ's legs in a piggyback hold. As Davey tried unsuccessfully to drunk me from the front, I grabbed one of TJ's feet and began to tickle it. He giggled and immediately let go of my neck. When he did that, I let go of his foot. I spun around to pretend to chase him and Davey immediately jumped on my back. TJ jumped onto the side of the pool. When he turned to see if I was still chasing him, he saw me tickling Davey's feet the same way I tickled his. Davey was playfully yelling to TJ for help.
Just when TJ was ready to jump back in to rescue Davey from my tickling fingers, Tom came up behind him and put his hand on TJ shoulders. TJ spun around and looked a bit scared.
"Hey Doug, its 3:00pm, are we going to hiking back down to the cabins."
"Only if you carry me," I laughed. He chuckled.
"There is a shuttle van that goes back and forth to the cabins every hour. The next one should leave hear at 4pm." Davey said.
"How do you know that?" I said a bit confused.
"Remember, Daddy, Mr. Taylor told us that, yesterday."
"Okay, TJ and I will head to the washrooms to ring out his shirt and shorts. We'll meet you out front."
They turned and walked toward the washroom. Davey and I got out of the pool and sat in the hot tub for a few minutes. I wasn't sure if I should ask Davey if he noticed the bruises on TJ back. I decided to keep it to myself for now. We changed and met Tom and TJ in the lobby. TJ seemed to go back to his shy and quiet self. Davey grabbed TJ hand and told him he wanted to show him something. He showed TJ the secret switches that turned on the displays.
"I guess I should apologies for Davey dragging TJ all over the place. He's acting like the big bossy brother."
"That's okay Doug; they are getting along like brothers so I guess all is well."
The van pulled up and we called for the boys. Davey asked if we were all going to eat dinner together. I said it was okay with me, Tom hesitated but then agreed to meet us at 6pm at the café. We each went to our separate cabins as soon as we got out of the van.
I had this nagging feeling that Davey and I should stay until Sunday morning. Before I checked with Davey, I wanted to make sure the cabin was still going to be available. I asked Davey to start the shower and I would join him in a minute. I called the main lodge and asked them if I could extend my stay until Sunday morning. They said the cabin was still available for the next three nights if I wanted it. I took them. Davey yelled that the shower was steamy.
As we were getting dressed for dinner, Davey mentioned that he had a great time with TJ and wished we did not have to leave tomorrow. I told him that we don't have to leave tomorrow. He spun around with his mouth wide open. I told him that I booked the cabin until Sunday morning. He grabbed me hard around the waist and hugged me.
We got to the café before Tom and TJ. We asked for a table for four. When Davey saw TJ, he ran up and told him that he was staying until Sunday. TJ had a huge smile on his face until Tom tapped him on the shoulder and directed him to the table.
"Hi, Doug, so I hear you and Davey are staying until Sunday. That's good to hear."
"Ya, the boys are getting along so well and you enjoy my warped sense of humour, so I figured we could have fun together. At the very least, the boys could go and play together and give us a rest part of the time."
"Ya, TJ and I can find lots of things to do together." Davey beamed.
"I'm sure there are a few things us old men can do around here, Tom." I chuckled.
"You and Tom are not old, Daddy."
"Sure, let's give it a try, what do you say, son?" Tom looked at TJ.
"You mean it?"
"Sure, you like hanging around Davey don't you?"
"Yes, it's like having a big brother."
"Then it's settled, thanks Doug for extending your stay."
"You're welcome, now I'm starving can we order." Everyone laughed.
After dinner, Davey asked if he could take TJ to the games room. TJ said he didn't have any money. Davey said he didn't need any money. It was going to be Davey's treat. He took TJ's hand and they went to the cabin to get Davey's wallet. Tom and I went to the lounge for an after dinner drink.
Tom said that he and his wife divorced over two years ago. He said it was a bad custody battle she got full custody originally but he finally got shared custody of TJ last month. He said he lost a whole year with TJ.
He finished one drink, went to the bar and came back with one for me and another double for him. He went on to trashing his ex-wife. He got up and asked if I wanted another drink. I purposely coasted on my second drink. He came back with his third double within an hour.
He started to tell me what a handful TJ can be at times. He said it seemed like every hour the kid wanted something. The way he talked about TJ when the boy would misbehave was with the same angry tone he used when describing his ex-wife.
He got up to get his forth double and I took him up on his offer for another drink because I did not want to offend his 'generosity.' He stumbled back almost spilling the drinks. I just sipped my drink as he gulped his. He did admit to having to yell at TJ from time to time and send him to his room. He did not know what he would do when TJ became a teenager.
He asked the bartender to bring him another drink. He told me that the reason his ex-wife got full custody was because she filed wife battery and child abuse charges against him. I really don't think he would have shared that with me if the booze weren't taking its toll on him. He said I did 18 months in jail and had to take an anger management course in jail. He got out last month. He said he lost his contractor's license and now had to take dead end low paying jobs.
It was almost 10:00pm, when Davey walked into the lounge. I looked around for TJ. He was standing at the door. Davey asked me if I could walk him and TJ back to the cabins. Tom was almost passing out. I whispered to Davey to go wait at the door with TJ. I stood up and Tom tried to get up but could not. I put my hand on his shoulder and told him I would tuck the boys in tonight and Tom could do it tomorrow night. He just nodded his head. Tom yelled for another double. I figured that would make him pass out for sure. I told the bartender I would be back to check on Tom. He told me not to worry about it. The bartender told me had to carry Tom back to his cabin last night. He just told me to take care of TJ.
When the boys and I went outside, Davey said that TJ wanted to talk with me. I knelt down and looked at TJ. He tried to say something but then he just started to cry. I put my arms around him and held him tight. Davey rubbed TJ's back. I picked TJ up and carried to the cabins. I decided to bring him to our cabin. Davey turned on the lights. I carried TJ to the couch and sat down still holding on to him. Davey locked the cabin door and kept looking out the front window. I told Davey to come and sit with us. He sat down and rubbed TJ's back.
Davey asked TJ if he could start to tell me what was wrong. TJ just nodded his head on my shoulder. Davey started from the time they left to go to the get his wallet. He wanted to cheer TJ up so he did some light tickle pokes on the way to the cabin. He demonstrated by lightly poking TJ belly. TJ giggled on my lap but still buried his head in my shoulder. I told Davey to continue.
"We got my wallet and TJ was happy. We went to the camper before the games room so I could show him my adoption certificate. We started play wrestling and tickling each other on the bed. When I tried to pull up TJ shirt to tickle his bare belly, TJ got up and said they should go to the games room. We were playing games and I was telling him some stories about our play times. I thought things were going good but TJ's eyes started to water and he ran out of the games room. I ran after him. He stopped by the picnic tables. He sat down and buried his head in his arms. That's when he really started to cry."
TJ stopped crying on my shoulder so I asked him if he wanted to finish tell me what happened. He nodded his head.
"Davey started rubbing my back as I was crying on the table. He kept asking me what was wrong. I wanted to tell him but I couldn't stop crying. He turned me around, hugged me and let me cry on his shoulder. First, I told him that I missed my mommy. Then I couldn't get any more words out. Davey just held onto me and rubbed my back. Then, I told him that my dad forced me to come on this trip with him. Last year, the judge told my mommy and me that my dad was not allowed to come back into our house. He sent dad to jail for hitting us. Mommy was scared of my dad so we moved away. On Monday, dad found out where we moved. He was mad that mommy and I moved away. He kicked in the front door. He hit mommy."
TJ buried his head in my shoulder again and started crying uncontrollably. Davey continued.
"TJ saw his mommy hit the floor but she didn't get up. His dad picked him up, carried him to the van, and drove away. TJ was crying so his dad pulled over. He took of his belt and kept hitting TJ on the back until TJ fell asleep."
"TJ can I show my daddy your back?" Davey lifted up TJ's shirt. The bruises that I saw in the pool went half way up his back and just past his tail bone.
"TJ woke up in the cabin next door Tuesday morning and they've been here ever since. Tuesday night and last night, his dad came back to the cabin drunk and took the belt to him again. He's really scared Daddy. I told TJ you would know what to do."
TJ started crying and shaking. I just held him and Davey rubbed his back.
I decided the safest place for TJ would be in our camper. His farther would be too drunk to look for him there tonight. I told Davey to turn off all the lights in the cabin and check to see if Tom was coming down the lane. I picked TJ up. Davey opened the door and I carried TJ to the camper. I tried to lay him on the bed but he wouldn't let go of my neck. Davey told TJ that its Okay and that he would be safe in the camper. It was only when Davey said that he would not leave, that he let go of my neck. Davey put his arm around TJ. I told both of them that I was going to talk to the bartender and call the police. TJ got worried. I told him I was calling the police to find out about his mother. That calmed him down a bit. TJ told me his last name and mother's first name. I told Davey not to put any lights on and not to use any flashlights. There was enough light in the camper coming in front the lamp posts outside. I told Davey to lock the door and not to answer the door for anyone but me.
I went back into the lounge Tom was past out on the same chair that I left him in. I waved to the bartender to come to the door.
"How long has he been out?"
"About 30 minutes."
"Do you think he will be out for the night?"
"Oh ya, I had to carry him back to his cabin."
"How fast can you get the police up here?"
"What for?"
"Well, for starters, Tom's son just told me that Tom has beaten him with a belt the last two nights. I saw the deep bruise on his back myself."
"WHAT?"
"Look I'll explain more after you call the police. Unless you want to deal with him when he wakes up?"
He used the phone at the front desk and I kept my eyes on Tom.
"The dispatcher said there was a cruiser along the highway and he would get here in about 30 minutes."
"Let's just hope Tom doesn't wake up before then."
I met the officers outside and told them my name. I told them I had a boy in my camper with my son I told them that the boy was been beaten with his father's belt and was very scared. I pointed to Tom through the widow and told them that was the father. The male officer kept an eye on Tom while I took the female officer to see TJ.
I knocked on the door and called Davey's name. He opened the door and TJ was hiding behind him. We walked inside. I asked Davey to turn the lamp on. The boys and I sat on the couch and the officer sat across from us.
"TJ, this is Officer Judy. She wants to talk to you." TJ grabbed me tight around the neck again and buried his head in my shoulder.
"I don't want to leave you and Davey. Please don't let them take me."
"Shhh, I promise everything is going to be alright, TJ. Officer Judy just wants to talk to you for now."
"Hi."
He looked at her but didn't let go of me.
"Can you tell me your full name?"
"Thomas William Jones, but Davey and his dad call me TJ and my mommy calls me Billy"
"What would you like me to call you?"
"Billy"
"Okay Billy how old are you?"
"9."
"When is your birthday?"
"May 19th."
"TJ, Can I show Officer Judy you back?"
He put his head on my shoulder and I lifted up his shirt. Her mouth opened in shock but didn't say a word. I lowered his shirt back down.
"Billy, how did you get those bruises?"
He looked at me. I just nodded.
"My dad hit with me his belt." He started crying again on my shoulder.
Judy got up and headed for the door. I told TJ that I had to go out and talk with Officer Judy but I would be right outside. Davey took TJ into the back bedroom. We went to the front of the RV so the boys wouldn't hear us.
"Well he has definitely been abused. I have grounds to arrest his father."
"TJ told me that his father kicked in the door at his mother's, knocked her out and took him. Is there any way you could check to see if she's Okay?"
"She's fine. We got a report of child abduction on Tuesday. Billy is the boy we have been looking for. How did you know?"
"He told my son the whole story and they told me together."
She got on the radio and told her partner to cuff Tom and put him in the cruiser.
"Do you have to take TJ tonight?"
"Well… I would like to leave him with you and your son but I know nothing about you."
"Wait here a minute."
I went into the camper and asked Davey to get his adoption gift box. I grabbed the court papers and took them to Judy.
"Last Friday, these papers were sent to me officially adopting Davey as my son. I'll give you the name of my lawyer in Toronto, My Driver's license and any other identification you need."
She looked over the court papers and asked if she could take them with her. She assured me that she would bring them back tomorrow. I would have agreed to almost anything not to put TJ threw anymore trauma. She ran my name and license through the RCMP computer and everything checked out.
"Okay Mr. Smith, I'll leave the boy in your care tonight. We will come back tomorrow to figure the rest out."
"Where is his mother now?"
"Prince Rupert, she is staying with friends there."
"So I can tell TJ that she is definitely all right?"
"According to the report, he hit her pretty good and she stayed over night in the hospital but just for observation. She is out now and staying with friends."
"Thank you."
"I think I should be thanking you. Not many people would get involved like you did."
She shook my hand and went back to the cruiser.
I went back into the camper. I picked TJ up and sat him on my knee. The first thing I told him was that his mother is alive and Okay Davey let out a big cheer. TJ gave me a big hug around the neck. Next, I told them that TJ would be staying with us tonight. The police took his father away.
I took the boys back into the cabin. I asked TJ if I could take a couple of pictures of his back for the police. I said it should be done to make sure his father never hurts him again. Davey gently helped him off with his shirt and told him that everything will be okay. He said that TJ is safe and that all we want to do is keep him safe. I did not have him pull his shorts off. He just pulled then down to where the bruises stopped. His bruises went from the middle of his back to the top part of his little bum. They went all the way across his back. You could still clearly see straight lines that the belt left. It showed that the belt was about 1.5 inches wide. I set the resolution to high so there would be no question as to the extent of the bruises. I took full back angles, close up, full body length and side angles. I wanted to put his so-called father away for a very long time for beating this sweet little boy. A spank is one thing but this man beat this gentle boy until he passed out from the pain. I put the camera down. I knelt down, put him on my knee and gave him a warm and loving hug. I thanked him for letting my take the pictures. Davey put TJ's shirt back on him.
I told them to sleep upstairs and I would sleep on the couch downstairs. I carried TJ up the stairs and playfully plopped him on the bed. Davey jumped on my back and I spun him around and plunked him on the bed. I pinned Davey down, lifted up his shirt and blew on his belly button. He squealed and laughed as hard as he could. I looked over at TJ and he was giggling at the site of Davey being tickled. I let go of Davey and carefully picked up TJ in both arms. I lifted up his shirt and blew on his belly button too. Then I plopped him on the bed again. Davey wanted to play some more but I told him we all needed our rest. It was going to be a big day tomorrow. I went downstairs and let the boys get undressed in private. I went into the kitchen and poured then each a glass of milk. As I was going up the stairs, I heard TJ squeal after Davey blew on his belly.
"What's going on here?" I asked trying to sound firm. Davey didn't buy it for a minute.
"Watch this Daddy." He had TJ pinned and blew on his belly again. TJ giggled with delight.
"I think its TJ turn to blow on your belly Davey." Davey tried to get off the bed but I was too fast. I pinned Davey back on the bed and told TJ to blow on Davey's belly. TJ was giggling but didn't come closer.
"Go ahead, TJ, Daddy's right, it is your turn." TJ came over and tried to take a deep breath but he was giggling too much. He finally calmed down enough to take a deep breath and blew on Davey's belly. I told him Davey did it twice to him so he had one more turn on Davey's belly.
After that, I let Davey go and handed each of them a glass of milk. When they finished I pulled back the covers and tucked them in. They each gave me a hug and I kissed each of them on the forehead.
I went back downstairs, pulled out the couch and immediately fell asleep on the it.
I awoke with Davey whispering in my ear. It was still dark outside.
"Daddy, TJ is scared and crying. He had a bad dream. He thinks his dad is going to come in and take him away. I did everything I know to calm him down. He's asked for you."
I went upstairs, sat on the edge of the bed and gently rubbed TJ's back.
"Hey little buddy, are you having a hard time sleeping?" He rolled over and nodded his head.
"The police took your dad far away and I promise you that he is not coming back to hurt you."
"I want my mommy." He wrapped his arms around my neck and started to cry again.
"You will see her soon that is why I said we have a big day tomorrow. We have to find a way to get you back to your mommy." He seemed to calm down a bit.
"Can you sleep with us tonight? When I'm scared and can't sleep, mommy sleeps with me." He looked at me with cute wet puppy dog eyes.
"Sure I will."
We all climbed into bed together. Davey was on one side and TJ on the other side of me. I put one arms around each of them and gently rubbed their backs.
"Thanks Daddy, I knew you would know what to do." He whispered in my ear.
Editor's Notes:
Doug sure is a good man and Daddy. Poor TJ or should that be Billy? I was thinking Tom was a bit squirrelly but this was beyond what I had figured. It will be really hard for Davey to let TJ go when he has to return to his Mommy. I was worried that she was hurt real bad or even dead. At least there will be a happy reunion. Well it will be interesting to see just what tomorrow will bring.
